Things to do in Port Douglas

What's happening in Port Douglas

Port Douglas in Far North Queensland should be high up on every traveller's to do list. About an hour by car North of Cairns, Port Douglas is now very much a tourist town. In the 1980's travel operators started to operate tours to Low Isles and then to the Outer Barrier Reef from Dickson Inlet which was until then, mainly a fishing port.

Today, the town is much bigger and tourism is the main focus. It is not unlike Airlie Beach in that people go to Port Douglas to do other things. Just as Airlie Beach is the gateway to Hamilton Island, Whitehaven Beach and Day Dream Island, Port Douglas is the stepping off place to the Daintree River, Cape Tribulation, Low Isles and even Cooktown for a longer journey.

There is ample accommodation in town ranging from caravan parks, hostels, apartments right up to high end luxury villas.

There are lots of places to eat and drink along the main street and side streets, so many in fact, that it would take over three months to eat at every restaurant or hotel in "Port"

If you get sick in Port Douglas the man to see is Dr. John Archer. He has been there since about 1980 and knows heaps about tropical health issues.

Low Isles is just off shore but over the horizon and is very popular for day tripping and snorkelling in the sheltered warm lagoon beside the lighthouse between the two islands that make up Low Isles. While Four Mile Beach is safe to swim for part of the year ( stingers make swimming in the summer months dangerous ) Low Isles is much safer and the water is more clear.

Try to get out and about a bit further North to the Bloomfield River along the road to Cooktown. The tropical wilderness really is special. There are not many places where the tropical jungle goes right down to the water's edge next to coral cays.

Walking around Port Douglas is a great way to spend half a day. There are lots of shops and at each end of the main street there are different beaches.
