Tips on Choosing the Best Fitness Club to Join

  • Written by News Company

Year after year, thousands of people join fitness clubs in January as part of their New Year’s resolutions. However, studies show that most of them don’t stick for very long. In fact, according to the International Health, Racquet and Sports Club association, only about 20% to 25% of people continue to attend their gym throughout the year.

This might leave you wondering how to choose a fitness club in Avignon that you’ll enjoy attending and will continue to visit all year. The best answer is to join a fitness club that you really like and feel 100% comfortable visiting from the moment you walk in until the moment you walk out.

When looking for a new club to join, be sure to ask yourself a few questions such as whether the employees greet you and make you feel welcome, as well as whether the people there seem like they’re enjoying their work outs.

Of course, there are dozens of fitness clubs in the area and this can make choosing the best one somewhat of a difficult task. With that in mind, we’ve come up with a list of important factors to consider when choosing a new fitness club to join.

How Busy Is the Gym During the Hours You Plan on Attending?

It’s always a good idea to visit a gym during the hours that you plan on working out. Take the time to see how busy it is and whether or not there are line ups for the machines you plan on using. If people are lining up four or five deep to use a machine, you might want to consider visiting a different gym.

Ask About the Gym’s Emergency Response Plan

This is especially true for people who have some sort of disability. However, in the event that you or someone else in the gym has a sudden cardiac arrest, it’s important to know that the gym is prepared for it.

Typically, most fitness club staff will be trained in CPR and first aid, but it’s more important to make sure that the gym also has an AED. Studies have shown that having an automated external defibrillator nearby can significantly increase a patient’s ability to survive a cardiac event. Therefore, when visiting a gym for the first time, make sure to ask if they have an AED and whether their staff members are trained to use it.

Find A Gym Close to Where You Live

Despite a person’s best intentions to join a fitness club and stick with their plans, no one is likely to drive 15 or 20 minutes out of their way to go and work out. One good strategy is to use Google to scope out gyms that are within a small radius from your home or where you work. Finding a gym that’s close to where you often are is crucial to being able to stick with your workout plans.

Also, while checking out fitness clubs that are nearby, make sure to check for other deterrents such as whether parking is available or if the gym is in an area that suffers regularly from heavy traffic.

Make Sure the Gym is Clean

It’s a well-known fact that gyms are prone to being covered in germs. In fact, a recent study by the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine found that approximately 63% of gym surfaces tested positive for the common cold virus.

With that in mind, make sure that the fitness club you choose has a professional cleaning crew that comes in and cleans daily, as well as having a strict policy on wiping down the equipment after being used.

Make Sure There’s A Good Mix of Equipment

When you visit a gym for the first time, make sure to look around and check whether most of the equipment comes from the same company or not. Keep in mind that while one company might make a really good elliptical machine, they may not make the best weight lifting equipment.

So, make sure that the gym you choose has a variety of equipment from different manufacturers. It’s also a good idea to ask when the equipment has been purchased. If you’re going to be spending your hard-earner money on a membership, make sure that some of it actually goes into the gym supplying its members with quality equipment.

Check in with The Gym’s Culture

Not all gyms are targeted for the same demographic. Some gyms are meant for people who are really into lifting weight and body building, while others might be geared towards average people who are just looking to burn off a few calories and get in shape. With that in mind, it’s always a good idea to get a feel for the gym’s culture before signing up.
