Things to do in Airlie Beach

What's happening in Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach is one of the main stops on the backpacker circuit on Australia's East Coast.

For some, the backpacker World Tour of Australia starts at Sydney Airport. From there, people from a vast number of countries head to the city ( Avoid Maze Backpackers. It stinks. Carpet smells and the hundred year old corridors will be dangerous in a fire ) to explore the stunning range of things to do in Sydney.  After that, Bondi is a must see. From there, backpacking adventurers head to Byron Bay, then Brisbane, then Fraser Island and then on to Airlie Beach and the amazing Whitsundays.

Airlie Beach town is right on the ( extremely blue ) water and has a huge clean artificial lagoon for those who do not want to risk crocodiles or stingers. The centre of Airlie Beach is the prime location for fun and adventure 24/7 with hotels, bars, entertainment and hostels.

Visitors to the Whitsundays catch boats of all sizes to Whitehaven Beach, Hamilton Island, Daydream Island, Hayman Island and many other islands, coves and reef destinations.

There is an airport on the road that runs from Airlie Beach to Shute Harbour. From there, joy flights, float planes and commuter aircraft head off to the Great Barrier Reef, Hayman Island and Hamilton island. A very active skydiving operation is based at Whitsunday Airport with drop zones above the airport and over Airlie Beach itself.

Airlie Beach has luxury accommodation provided by major corporations and local owners. You can even stay at the new marina for a quick start for a boat trip to the reef. Hostels offer great rates and entertainment. Caravan Parks also cater for backpackers and adventurers. Flame Tree Caravan Park is good just out of town next to the airport. Camper Vans have ample space in the tropical grounds.

In Airlie Beach, the Yacht Club is a great place to meet people, have a cheap ( but good ) meal and learn how the locals enjoy life in The Whitsundays.

Australia's adventure travel operators have offices in Airlie Beach to drop in, book a tour or get information.
