What is Tequila?

Tequila is a regional distilled beverage and is made from the blue agave plant. The plant can be found in the city of Tequila (which is 65 km from Guadalajara) and in the Jaliscan Highlands of the Mexican state of Jalisco.

The spirit is commonly served neat in Mexico and as a shot with salt and lime in other countries. It also can be incorporated in various cocktail drinks, such as Tequila Sunrise. Tequila is produced with an alcohol content of between 35-55%.

According to Isabella De Cardenas, from REVIEWBOX, there are some strange laws around the production and distribution of tequila. Mexican law states that tequila can only be produced in Jalisco and in limited municipalities in Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. The Mexican government also approved a proposal to celebrate National Tequila Day every third Saturday of March.
